Jubal Cain sang while poling a loaded barge, Up river, muscles taught and voice bellowing. He sang like a pirate with a strong low swing A sauntering melody with stomping heart:
Down in the south where the heat reigns There lies a wealth of toilsome pain A wealth untold, Unspoiled for the bold Those who seek it will never be the same Down in the south where the heat rules Waves in the sky, deceptive pools Shimmering sights Playing with the eyes Drawing to their death, treasure-seeking fools Deep underground, from where steam rises Hunters find profound depths of desire Their brains melt away as their eyes grow wider Burning with the passion of greed’s fervent fire Down in the south where the heat reigns There lies a wealth of toilsome pain A wealth untold, Unspoiled for the bold Those who seek it will never be the same Down in the south where the heat governs Blood evaporates off all the hands it covers Hard work doesn’t pay ‘less its done in the shade Built on sweat from the labor of others Deep underground, from where steam rises Hunters find profound depths of desire Their brains melt away as their eyes grow wider Burning with the passion of greed’s fervent fire Down in the south where the heat reigns There lies a wealth of toilsome pain A wealth untold, Unspoiled for the bold Those who seek it will never be the same The other two on the barge pounded their fists Turning crates to drums and stomping out the beat, The song rippling the water and tree’s leaves Singing song after song up the river twists. Creatures along the banks and in the trees heard. Few travelers would make such a bold ruckus. Many who heard thought the bargers ludicrous. Still, the bargers carried on up the river.
