Inside "Love and Enough"
I wrote this thinking about my son. Maybe that’s obvious, but it could be for anyone another person cares for.
I was listening to an audio book with my little guy as he was trying to nap (actually an audio version of a disney movie). I don’t remember the exact line, but the sentiment was something like this: a mother was telling her daughter that all she wanted for her as she grew up and experienced life was love. The idea was that love is enough to see you through the hardest of times much like the line from Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer, “We’ve got each other and that’s a lot for love.” But even that song admits they are only “halfway there.” In the story the mother and daughter are poor and the daughter dreams of owning a successful business. The sentiment is sweet and makes for a heartwarming feel-good story. As I listened to the mom I realized I do want love for my son in all of his life, but I want a love that is more than a feeling; and, I want something that extends past love (or maybe is more rudimentary than the high ideal of love if that is possible).
