Taught in a school with half kids Half scared Half there Fear filled the halls Anxiety in the eyes Stood in the parking lot on a warm day Looking for a freeze Outside the school where I teach Less traffic moves more quickly Or is it cautious efficiency Kids are strong in the face of fear Reading history That draws near Working in anticipation to see If the school will come under a freeze Small classes make learning personal Learning to read what's inside Teachers' and students' eyes "Will you protect me from the cold?" What can I offer? Hope? Rights hang around the room For when the freeze comes soon We'll know what there is to lose The freeze takes friends and family It comes for our very humanity Teaching in a school half there The cold, we know, is waiting Not here yet, but out there somewhere We all know we are prone to freeze The forecast said winter is coming
